It's the Fourth of July and there's a pool party tonight that I'm going to be too tired to participate in. Despite being kind of an anxious introvert, I do enjoy being around people. They're just exhausting, and I've already been feeling like a zombie all week. Maybe I caught something at the doctor's office when I went in for my checkup.
I had a great time on Thursday crafting with my friends. One of the girls taught us to crochet and we sat around crocheting and complaining about our jobs all afternoon. We had chicken tacos and sweet potato fries for dinner, which we almost forgot to eat because we were so absorbed in our crafting and socializing.
I traded out my library books yesterday and realized I had finished three books in a week. The first book I read, The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street, was my favorite of the three. I like stories involving large families and the antics the kids get into. In this story, the five Vanderbeeker kids try to befriend their shut-in landlord so he will renew their lease instead of kicking them out at the end of the year. It was really fun and cute without being dumbed-down and babyish. It's a relatively new series and I look forward to reading future installments.

The second book I read was The Blue Castle. It's about a Canadian woman who, at 29, is feeling depressed about being single and stuck with her boring, teasing family. When a doctor tells her she's mortally ill, she realizes she doesn't have to care so much what everyone thinks and begins living on her own terms. The story got pretty slow in places but I think a lot of women can identify with Valancy and her troubles.
The last book I read was Keeper of the Lost Cities. I had heard it's a bit of a Harry Potter ripoff, and I can totally see that. The main character, Sophie, leaves her normal, lonely, human life to attend a school where she learns magic (except they say it's not magic, it's just the way the world is, so science?) and is at the center of some kind of dangerous plot by an unnamed group out to do... something. It's unclear at this point. Plot similarities aside, it was definitely lacking something. Sophie has all of these super-special powers and whatnot, but she doesn't really do much with them except wonder if it's OK to try to read people's minds without their permission. She doesn't do things, things happen to her, which isn't my favorite way for a plot to move along.
Well, it's almost time for that pool party. At least I can go eat something and talk to people, right? Have a day!
